Your Instructor

My name is Janet Underwood and I’ll be your instructor for this course. I've been a professional writer for more than 30 years and held many different kinds of jobs during that time. I've worked in publishing, business, and nonprofits. I've been a reporter, an editor, a Director of Communications, a technical writer, an instructor, and an author. As a technical writer and consultant, I’ve written technical documentation and managed writing projects for several government agencies and companies.

Over the years, I've noticed that technical writers and technical professionals who have exemplary writing skills are more likely to be promoted in their jobs and have their work recognized. They are people who understand how the language works and how to meet their readers’ needs. They know how to write powerful sentences and choose their words with care. In short, they are skilled communicators and wordsmiths.

Unfortunately, far too many people do not fall into this category, which is a shame because these are skills that no one is born knowing – they have to be learned! This course focuses on those skills you need to write technical documents that stand out and get you noticed. I hope to see you in class!
